THE  PBTC PRO-AM AMERICAN TOURNAMENT

The above tournament, which was organised by John and Janet Brotherhood, took place on the sunny afternoon of Sunday 18 September. In fact, this was the seventh such tournament, the first having taken place in 1994 while the most recent one was in May 2000. Therefore, it was long overdue!

Twenty participants took part, ten being club members who were playing with their invited ‘non-tennis’ AM partners. A total of 50 matches was played, each of four games, and John kept a tight control over the scores of individual players.

Pam Hart kindly assisted with the tea which included a selection of Janet’s cakes and the usual supply of meringues, while Chris Cooke opened the bar, which was greatly appreciated by everybody and resulted in a little more for the bar kitty!

Trophies were presented to the winners and runners up. The winners turned out to be a family affair with Brian Baker taking the Pro section and his son Michael winning the Am section while the Pro runner up was John Pyndiah and the Am runner up was Paul Levitt (Susana’s husband).

The one blemish on the day was that Bob Daintree (Chris Cooke’s partner) suffered a fall which resulted in a hospital visit for attention to his ruptured Achilles. We hope he makes a speedy recovery.

That aside, a great day for all those taking part and the supporters who turned up.So, hopefully, everybody will be looking  forward to the next  one, which will probably be scheduled for the Spring.  So keep an eye on the notice boards in the team room for news of the next date.

A new member’s eye view of…

Open Day 2011

by Josephine Ghodhbani

As a fairly recent recruit to Purley Bury, a slowly ‘improving’ player and a brand-new, fully-fledged member, I decided that the Centenary Open Day on Sunday 17 April would be a good (or bad!) opportunity to throw myself into my first tournament. I had no idea what to expect and what was an ‘American’ Tournament anyway?

The day began with open play from 10am and those members not running or watching the Marathon came down for a few warm-up matches... Click here for the full report.

BACK TENSION?

To prevent back tension stand against a wall with a tennis ball between your spine and your shoulder blade and move up and down. Repeat on the other side.

- advice in the Guardian from Trevor Chisman. Ditto for thighs and buttock muscles. He says some people never go anywhere without a tennis ball in their suitcase.

WHEN DOUBLES

ARE SINGLES

Men’s doubles match practice on Tuesday evenings has an interesting format – with a singles trophy every month! Pairs play eight games – one point sudden death at deuce – against each other. Individuals accumulate their games won so there is a singles winner every four weeks.

Players who win three months in a row, like Richard Lowe get to keep the trophy.

Match practice is for members of the four men’s league teams and potential team players invited by the team captain. Mark Love invites junior members he feels could play in senior teams.

Matches are organised via email by Andy Adams.

Ideas please on events to help us celebrate – why not discuss them on Facebook? Or email Chairman Alan Browne. Or go for the low-tech route and talk to a member of the committee about it.

From the PR Week/One Poll, a survey of 2,000 UK people, which asked:  ‘Which of the following sports players have the best reputation?’

Tennis came top, with 20% saying tennis players. Next came rugby (15%) then cricket, cycling, Formula 1 and golf - with, surprise, surprise, footballers last (5%).
