   2010 Plate Finals

  10 July 2010

The results in the Plate tournament for first-round losers were much clearer cut than in the championship itself. Everyone had the sense to keep it short in the heatwave! Everyone finished in two sets, two of them to love.

The men’s Plate did offer a curious family interchange with John Lowe partnering his son Daniel to beat Mike and Matt (Vaughan and Sorensen) in the men’s doubles while Daniel lost to his uncle Richard, John’s brother, in the singles. Richard also went on to win the mixed with Carolyn Backway, against Ian Livermore and Zoe Weekes. That’s the low down on the men in the Plate tournament.

On the ladies’ side Juliet Mason beat Sarah Wilson in the singles while Anne Potton and Val Cutmore beat Pam Sabin and Joan Thompson in the doubles.

There was some good tennis in these matches too and we must have contenders here to go much further in the main tournament next season.

I think running a Plate tournament with finals on the same day as the championship gives the club more breadth and is a great encouragement for everyone who enjoys competing. It’s much more ‘inclusive’, as today’s jargon goes, and could be a fine incentive to juniors who are coming through, in giving them more competitive tennis. Next year we intend to try to give up the whole morning to the Plate with the championship following.

Club Finals made a lovely day. Thanks to everyone who contributed: organising, making the club look smart and inviting,  winning or losing, watching, drinking, eating or tidying up. Thank you all.
