2010 Junior  Competition

11 July 2010

Commentary by Mark Love

Play started at 10.30am with eleven finals to be played from under 9s to under 18s. Not quite as hot as senior finals the day before perhaps but hot enough. We managed to finish around 4.30pm.

I thought all the players and their supporters conducted themselves very well and were a credit to the club. It’s very difficult being impartial when supporting your children! There was lots of cheerful support, the youngsters won and lost with grace, and there was some really good tennis, which really pleases me from the coaching standpoint.

The BBQ and the Bar were a great success and helped make the most of the event for everyone, making it very pleasant socially.

It was great to see Club Captain, Chairman and Ladies Captain down supporting our juniors on finals day.

It was of course tremendous for Harrison Walden, our last year’s U 18 boys champion at only 14, to go on and win this year’s senior men’s singles championship at 15, the youngest it’s been done and incidentally breaking the record of our chairman’s son Edward Browne by eight months! And he had to beat one of my coaches to do it.

All the results on the day are in the tramlines alongside but I’d just like to mention two special awards. Our Improved Mini Tennis Player is Joseph Byrne. Well done, Joseph.

And our Most Improved Junior Player is Danielle Hayter. Danielle lost in the finals of the Girls U16 doubles but won the Girls U18 singles. Tremendous performance Danielle!

We really look forward to the progress of our juniors from mini-tennis onwards and watching them move successfully and responsibly into senior tennis – via being a Young Person first of course.
