YOUTH DOMINATES FINALS WEEKEND

Youth made a clean sweep in the five club championship matches on Senior Finals Day, Saturday 11 July, when all the winners were under 25. Several young members were in more than one final: James Hart in three, Alastair Horsford, Amy Farrin and Joanna Levitt each in two. And the junior under-18 girls singles finalists, Lydia Fernandes and Joanna Levitt, won the ladies doubles.

Toby Pallet won his first singles title, Amy Farrin won the ladies singles, Joanna and James the mixed, while James and Alastair Horsford upset the holders in the men's doubles. What's more, the winners are all former junior members.

Youth, some of it extreme, was also in action all next day, Sunday 12 July, in the Junior Finals - from Under 9s to Under 18s.

Men's captain John Lowe organised play on Saturday - ten matches, five in the main competition, five in the Plate events for first-round losers. Club coach Mark Love organised eleven Junior Finals often using all five courts simultaneously.

Yesterday's youth, Andrew Wright, nine times men's singles champion, presented the Club Championship trophies. Possibly inspired by Greg Rusedski's visit on our Open Day, tournament entries were the highest ever.

In his report, being sent to the Croydon Advertiser, with pictures of the two young singles winners, Alan Browne said: "It's so encouraging for the future of the club. Four of the senior finals went to three sets so it won't be a one-year wonder. And watching the juniors you couldn't but be impressed by their behaviour on court, never mind the high standard of their hitting. They were a great credit to themselves, their parents and Mark Love's coaching team."

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Mark Love writes: Good weather graced junior finals day and this was matched by some good tennis from all the finalists. Harrison Walden won three finals - which is no easy feat - and his involvement in the men's team has added to his all-round game. Look out men's singles champs!

Player of the year went to William Collomosse, who narrowly missed out in two semi-finals - but he has worked hard at his game and spends many hours at the club practising and helping other players to feel welcome at the club. Tom Brown gets our most improved player award.

It was good to see the girls in action. We don't have too many at the club who wish to compete, but those who do make up for this with their talent. Congratulations to the U18 singles finalists who won the Club ladies' doubles championship.

As always a big thank you to all those who helped out on the day: bar staff, BBQ team, umpires, committee members and parents.
